Bid adieu to Ms Winnie Yip

After serving at the University for over two decades, Winnie begins a new chapter in July. As she bade farewell to the University, she quoted lyrics from one of her favourite songs "Those were the days".

Winnie likes listening to music about nature. She is also an art lover.

Those were the days, my friend
We thought they’d never end
We’d sing and dance forever and a day
We’d live the life we choose
We’d fight and never lose

Through the door, there came familiar laughter
I saw your face and heard you call my name
Oh, my friend, we’re older but no wiser
For in our hearts, the dreams are still the same…

It is never easy to say goodbye. Saying goodbye to a colleague who has been with us for two decades is even harder. In July, we bade farewell to Ms Winnie Yip Yun-ching, better known as Winnie among us, who retired from her post of Assistant Registrar of FLASS after serving at this faculty and its predecessors for over 24 years.

The University and the faculty have gone through momentous developments during the last two decades. Winnie joined The Hong Kong Institute of Education in January 1999 as Executive Officer I in the School of Foundations in Education (SFE). She participated in several rounds of academic restructuring. She has served in the Faculty Offices of the Faculty of Languages, Arts and Sciences (FLAS), Faculty of Arts and Sciences, as well as Faculty of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences (FLASS). She was promoted to the post of Assistant Registrar of FLAS in January 2008.

Professor Li Wai-keung, Dean of FLASS, thanks Winnie for all the efforts, hard work and dedication she has put into her job at the faculty.

As the Assistant Registrar of the faculty, Winnie works closely with academic staff to perform a wide range of duties, including student admissions and registration, strategic and academic planning, academic policies and regulations, committee work, and the organisation of faculty-wide events. Professor Li Wai-keung, Dean of FLASS, remarked: “Winnie has witnessed many landmark developments of this University and this faculty. During her years here, she provided invaluable services to us. Under her tutelage, the administrative team has gone from strength to strength. I cannot thank Winnie enough for all the effort, hard work and dedication she has put into her job at the faculty. On behalf of our administrative, teaching and research staff, I bid her a very fond farewell, and wish her the very best as she moves on to the next chapter in her life.”

Meanwhile, Ms Ellen Cheng has been promoted to succeed Winnie as Assistant Registrar of the faculty, starting 3 July 2023. “With her rich administrative experience at the University and the faculty, I trust she will be able to provide high-quality service in her new role,” Professor Li said.

Winnie’s farewell card cites a famous quote from Fred Rogers, the host of the classic educational children’s television series Mister Rogers’ Neighbourhood. It reads: “Often when you think you're at the end of something, you're at the beginning of something else.” While we will miss working with her at FLASS, we hope that Winnie’s next journey will have just as many beautiful memories as she experienced here. Winnie, we hope you enjoy the good times ahead of you.

During a sunny day in June, the administrative team enjoys a fabulous lunch at a seafood restaurant in Sam Mun Tsai. A farewell card and a bouquet of flowers, as well as all the lively conversation, smiles, best wishes and photos taken during and after the lunch, are all a part of Winnie’s fond memories of her time at the University and FLASS.

Ms Janice Liu presents a farewell card to Winnie on behalf of the administrative team. For 15 out of the 24 years Winnie has served at the University, she headed the administrative team of FLASS and its predecessors.

Ms Ellen Cheng, who will take up the role of Assistant Registrar, wishes Winnie pleasant times and good health in her retirement life.

Mr Louis Lam, a long-serving staff of FLASS, presents a bouquet of flowers to Winnie on behalf of the whole administrative team.

Members of the administrative team enjoy their farewell lunch with Winnie.

Winnie recalls many fond memories as well as challenging moments she has had during her service at FLASS.

Winnie will miss her team members who have worked closely with her throughout the years in both small tasks and big projects, as they have achieved so much together at FLASS.
